Affirmative Therapy

  • Affirmative therapy aims to provide LGBTQ+ patients with a plan designed to reinforce their own internal feelings regarding their sexual/gender identities, and how they can embrace a more positive view of themselves in a society grounded in tradition and conservatism.

  • This specific type of therapy focuses on the discrimination and micro-aggressions present within non-specific counseling services. Far too often TGNC people are invalidated by others who do not understand their uniquely lived experiences and retaliate in discriminatory, sometimes violent, ways.

  • Affirmative therapy addressed the concerns TGNC people have regarding minority stress. These mental health professionals are trained in understanding the impact specific stressors and triggers have on the human psyche, and how counteracting these stigmas can further improve mental stability and health.

  • It was developed with healing mindfulness, meaning the whole individual is addressed and completely understood by the therapist. The latter understands the interpersonal and structural oppressions that exist around or within the individual. All factors are assessed and analyzed to ensure the complete acceptance and affirmation of the individual. They are not a burden, and they should love their identities.
